(my GO TO site/magazine for the writing world and all its delicious info)
In the magazine's center-fold was an article about Tayari Jones (then an author I'm ashamed to say I'd never heard of) and by the time I finished the first few lines I knew I needed to google her and find her website! I'm not easily impressed with people but I couldn't help but find Tayari fascinating! She's smart, beautiful, educated, and absolutely a phenomenal writer.
I knew prior to starting A Thousand Splendid Suns that it was essential to read Silver Sparrow By Tayari Jones before the chaos of Fall semester started. The purpose was to be able to focus myself entirely on her novel, its style, presentation, and character development. Naturally I put it on my radar of books to read and blog about. So here I am, in Chapter 5 of the book and weeks before the semester is starting wishing I could pause the clocks that run the universe and bask in this moment of literary greatness.
What's most striking, thus far, about the novel is how effortlessly Ms. Jones shifts between time periods as Dana reveals the circumstances in her father's bigamist relationship with her mother, Gwendolyn. As a writer, I've always struggled with transitioning my readers between time periods so I've tried to make mental (and physical notes) as to how Ms. Jones does this successfully. They say that 'good writers are good readers' so I'm doing my due diligence to be the good reader now so this Fall I can be a good writer in the 3 writing classes I've registered for.
If you want to keep up with what I'm reading...I'm not too far into this book so catch up and let me know (by leaving a comment or emailing me at erikakimberlywrites@gmail.com) what you think of Silver Sparrow!
HAPPY READING LOVIES :o)
