I think about death a lot. I wonder how I'll die; I even pray about how it will happen. (Oddly enough I do have a preference and it's UNconventional, like me.) I'm not sure if it's because I've lost a lot of people I love or if it's just my nature to be sensitive when it comes to death but either way it's on my mind, frequently. When one of my closest friends was murdered I made it a point to OPTIMIZE my life. Sure, I've always known life was a vapor but it wasn't until I saw the youthful fog dissipate that I realized when your quiet and still you actually see life vaporizing. Death is an act, a swift one. It is fixed. It is real. In acknowledging those facts I've decided to live out loud, boldly, happily, and as fearless as possible.
I stumbled across Candy Chang's website and was excited to see such a talented person make such a bold statement. The white letters 'Before I die...' spray painted on black boards stirred the residents of New Orleans to reveal their most intimate wishes. What a phenomenal idea for an city that has gone through failures, triumphs, and difficulties! Sometimes the concept surrounding cities focus on the decay, poverty, and crime within it but realistically every city has hope. Hope comes from its people. This piece of art is organic in its approach and it sent a pulse through the city to show that New Orleans is indeed alive. And not only is New Orleans alive but its residents are not done living yet because they still have things they want to do before they die!
Someone wants to get clean, someone else wants to see their daughter graduate from school, and someone else wants to save a life! New Orleans, like most cities that look dead or lacking potential, is alive and well! Candy Chang and her team used a few words with big meaning to show us you can live your dying wish or dream right now!
I ask my readers: what do YOU wan to do before you DIE?
EK!
