Two of my FAVORITE non profits right now: ONE and TOMS. I came across ONE via Twitter when one of my amazingly successful male friends retweeted something about poverty in Africa. Immediately went to click the link because I love ALL things Africa and feel strongly about poverty becoming EXTINCT. I live free in this country, as an African American woman, enjoying freedoms that my ancestors could not think of let alone attain. So, there is no day or hour that I am without immense gratitude. Knowing how fortunate I am, I am drawn to my people who cannot live the life I live. I pray for my people who cannot receive vaccines, who are without an education, and who live in the poorest of POOR conditions. Clicking around the website I realized that much of my passions regarding Africa were the passions of the organization so I signed up to be a participant, read every blog entry, followed them on Twitter, and I bought a t-shirt. I believe in making a difference, great or SMALL.
Let's hear it for YOUNG AFRICA *cues applause*
TOMS caught my eye last summer when I was in one of my best friend's weddings. She had on the CUTEST pair of shoes and I told her so, repeatedly. She quickly pointed me to the website and told me that for EVERY shoe that was purchased a shoe was donated to a child in need. WOW! I couldn't believe it. I am the Queen of shoes! 5 inch heels, wedges, flats, slouchy boots, over the knee boots, peep toes, you name it and I guarantee you I have at least two pairs of it. I don't say that to boast, I say that to show you how deeply my love for shoes goes. Clearly buying a pair of shoes from TOMS was a no brainer. Fashion met Non profit and they lived happily ever after.
